In terms of square footage Michigan doesn't appear to be that big but DRIVING it is a whole 'nother matter. We drove until about 11:00 that night, crossing the bridge around 10:00.
We made a quick stop alongside a "Scenic Area" which overlooked Lake Superior and had some wooden stairs that led down to a previously unseen beach. It was mid afternoon and I waded out for a little bit and then decided to keep going. I came back to the shore, shucked my shirt and sloshed back out for a quick dunk. I figure if you are going to play in the water, may as well do it properly. It also helped that there was nobody in either direction to gawk curiously at me.
Lisa wanted to make a quick stop at Painted Rock which turned out to be really beautiful...and also fairly abandoned. It had these huge parking lots which had maybe 5 or 6 cars in the whole thing and as we got there we saw a park ranger locking things up.
Thinking we had missed the visitor center we asked what time they usually closed and got told that the place was generally always closed, she was just checking things out to make sure they were okay.
Boo. And what a waste.
Note to self: Check how much land the Fed and State have locked away.
