Just got back from the theater where I saw "The Book of Mormon: The Journey" and "The Rundown."

I can easily say with The Book of Mormon that the book is better. This thing moves slower than slogging through Isiah. Every scene is handled a little TOO reverently and to say the dialogue is clunky is like saying Niagra is a waterfall. Titanic felt shorter than this movie.
I wasn't overly bugged by the cheezy special effects, I wasn't too bugged by the cheeziness of the majority of the cast, (Lehi felt like a cross between Aladdin's Sultan and Santa Claus, Laman and Lemuel seem to be searching for scenery to chew and I'm getting REALLY tired of seeing Kirby Heyborne in *every* single LDS movie EVER MADE! (plus his wig and fake beard were distracting every time he was on screen.) Nephi, not so bad though every line was over the top deadly earnest. Or vacant. Just...bad. Ouch. And the thing never knew when to END.
When you start getting tired of the narrative when you read you can just close the book. This was like the energizer bunny. It just keeps going and going and going... and the music track was the same way. Every cue was either over the top "it's so miraculous, allelujah" or "ha ha, this scene is supposed to be amusing!" (it's not.) I feel bad because everybody seems to be trying SOOO hard, but yeessff. If this one makes enough money to make another one, lets hope they spend more time on the script. Gah.

Oh...and the shocking scene on the beach... no, it wasn't was when Nephi shocks them... oh, pain captain! I wondered if I would be struck down for wanting to MST3K this film. Best line ever... when Nephi gets loose from being tied up and stalks his way back to camp and Laban knows he's completely busted. "Um...sorry Nephi." For trying to MURDER YOU. Oh man. The six pack my stomach will have from repressed laughter.

So, I THEN went into our screening of The Rundown...and boy oh boy, what a FUN mindless film. After a few false starts I think it's safe to say that The Rock has inherited the "muscle bound action hero" title. There's even a VERY brief cameo from (R)nold. Blink and you might miss it.
It's just a FUN film from beginning to end. It's over the top testosterone action buddy film...which is GREAT. It's a silly story, but it's tight and Christopher (I can have the part of a piece of toast and keep you riveted) Walken is in it as (of course) The Bad Guy...and while on paper the lines may not seems to great, you have to hear the delivery. "Wow!" indeed.
I was VERY pleasantly surprised when the credits started rolling that it was penned by no other than R.J. Stewart of Xena fame. Nice to see he's still writing buddy stories set in Amazonian jungles. Hee.
It's a mindless film, but boy oh boy, it's a lot of fun with a LOT of terrific action sequences/fight scenes... and hey, The Rock takes his shirt off at one point. As I told the boys at the theater, if they can ogle every girl on screen I can appreciate a good piece of beefcake when I see it. Hey, he shaves his pits! Smooth baby, yeah!

Okay, thus endeth my movie reviews. Apparently there's no Friday Five this week so I will do the one from a year ago:

1. What are your favorite ways to relax and unwind?
A shower, clean sheets and a good thick book.

2. What do you do the moment you get home from work/school/errands?
Pet the cat, check the email.

3. What are your favorite aromatherapeutic smells?
Cinnamon, eucalyptus, clove

4. Do you feel more relaxed with a group of friends or hanging out by yourself?
Depends. Generally I feel more jazzed up and energized with friends though.

5. What is something that you feel is relaxing but most people don't?
Drawing naked people.
Sometimes when I'm lying in bed I will hold my breath just to see how long I can hold it. It's odd but it really settles me.

  • "ARRROOOO?" or "Is anybody there?"

I miss the long form writing I used to do with my life. I should get back to it. Is anyone still here?

  • Checking in

Got a notice that if I don't do a post every so often they'll delete my LJ account. I'd rather that not happen.

  • "10 Things" or "Q&A"

In no particular order: 10. So?!! Well, the very short version is, I didn't get the job from Pixar. 9. Longer version? The slightly longer…
