"Poems should not rhyme," my sister said.
My English teacher too.
Tacky and trashy and terribly trite.
The problem is, I think to myself,
Rhymes are so easy to do.

There have been a few that don't rhyme that I like quite a bit...(Robert Frost) but I cheerfully admit I like the rythems and beats of things that rhyme. Hello...The RAVEN...anything by Lewis Carroll or Shel Silverstein. I also cheerfully admit that in matters of poetry I am wildly uneducated.

In other news, I think I've said it before but I love the simplicity of your icon.

I love it! Truly! And I think some poems should rhyme and some shouldn't - it depends on the thought in the poem. Poems both the most concise form of language other than mathematics, and the most layered with meanings. Sometimes structure and rhyme help the poet find the precision of thought they're seeking, sometimes they limit it. It all depends. I do both according to the need.

Anyone can write mere doggerel,
It's why rhyming is out of fashion.
But a true poetic genius
Creates rhymes of beauty and passion.

It's not whether it rhymes that matters
The question is "Does this come from the heart?
Will these lines last longer than I will?
Has this poet created true art?"

((I apologise for the faint rumbling noise you may have heard while reading this. I believe that was Byron, Shelley, Wordsworth et all rolling in their graves *g*))

Heh.
Although prose is nice, I prefer rhyming, too. It's poem-y and stuff.
