When I was a junior in high school we studied among other things early American history and literature. Scarlet Letter, Nathanial Hawthorne, The Crucible...you know the typical stuff you learn in Honors English. Early on in the year we were divided in groups and were given a list of 5 topics. Each group was supposed to pick a topic but there could be no overlap in the class. Out of the five topics EVERYBODY wanted to do their presentation on The Salem Witch Trials and we expected much jockying to see which group could get to do it.

After class we all bolted to the front to request our topic. Mrs. Hill spoke over the din, told us to be quiet and said for the group rep to line up and she would write down who got what. By some miracle I was the first there to talk to her and waited politely as she finished up some business. She finally lifted up her head and looked at me ...just in time for Shauna McPherson to come rushing up, completely ignoring the line and bark, "MRS. HILL! OUR GROUP WANTS THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS!"

I waited for Mrs. Hill to chastise Shuana for igonoring the rules, for rudely inserting herself in front of me...and was even more agog as she wrote down Shauna's name by The Salem Witch trials!

"Wait a minute!" I said. "I waited in line like you said! She just butted in!"

"I guess you learned a lesson," Mrs. Hill said.

I guess I did.

Don't listen to the teacher? Be rude and disrespectful? Argh. I hope I never teach my students those kinds of lessons.

You know of course Shauna could walk on water, but she did make tons of noise even when she was collecting all of her awards. Some teachers are so blind or I should say dumb. Obviously she didn't think anyone would obey her instructions.

as much as I hate that being the dynamic in much of today's society, to get anywhere you usually have to do "whatever it takes" to do so. Even if it means stepping on toes.

It occurs to me that the kid across the street is probably going to really go places in life because she's so loud and obnoxious that I can HEAR HER FROM HERE!!!

Sorry. I feel better now.
