Who spells, on a date?

I know a woman I chat with online who is a reading specialist at an elementary school. She cannot spell to save her life. I worry about those poor kids. (And I wonder how she got her Master's.)

Consider this a teaching opportunity. Most people, once they get out of school, (and stop the rebellious crap) are glad to learn more sanitary speling habits. Poor spelling can be cured, and they can realize it will help their work and (maybe)dating possibilities. You like to teach, don't you?

That's true. I'm just baffled by the "you're" and "your" mostly. Honestly, I screw up the "its" and "it's" myself.

I guess you can tell by my answers I am an English teacher.

My husband has about ten different kids of LD. He will NEVER remember which "its/it's" to use. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

My biggest pet peeve is having a friend for YEARS and they still can't spell my name right, first or last. I guess cuz I make it a priority to correctly spell my friends names and learn them with in the first week.

...I don't think I'm allowed to answer this (even though I did), as I undoubtedly skew the results. After all, I'm a professional editor. They PAY me to be ungodly picky!

I'm the worst of all beasts: a professional writer/editor who is also a linguist. I have to rein myself in because I can easily float to, "Hey, if the meaning works, it's ok!"

I'm making a not of all the people I shouldn't be dating.

I still don't understand why that dating question is in there. I mean, who spells while on a date?

Was that "not" or "note"? ha!

Maybe it was a scrabble or boggle date.

Typos, I don't mind.

Grammar mistakes and misspellings are a different story.

This laptop, for example, sometimesforgets it hasa spacebar. :)

But if you are dating someone, you see pretty quickly if they can spell, especially in the day of email and IM.

I married a writer. I honestly could not go on in a relationship if the person couldn't tell your from you're. I am dead serious.

I was pointed in this journal's direction by rockymento.

I was just wondering, did you notice your 2nd to last question doesn't have a question mark?

Hehehe.

Would it be alright if I put you on my friend's list? I'm in the 2 livejournal club, one for writing, and one for my comics. Check them out if you want. areleejensen and vanillapuddle if you're interested.

I like your comics.

*I* understand the dating question. :)

If I'm emailing a guy back and forth, and his spelling/grammar/general coherency is sloppy or poor, I lose interest very quickly. It either indicates his intelligence isn't high enough to match mine/keep my interest, or he doesn't care enough about me to re-read what he just wrote. Either way, it is a dealbreaker.

Harsh, but true. ;P

If I were still in the dating market, I'd be the same way. It just makes my fillings vibrate.

My biggest pet peeve is people who think it's either cannot or can not. They mean different things! One is right in one context, and one is right in another. Grrr....

I should be more patient. I used to be one of those people, but then a wiser, more educated and linguistic soul helped the scales fall from my eyes. Now I'm an evangelist :-)
