Naked Tuesday

After a week's hiatus, I'm back.

  Cassandra:  Five minutes

Not bad.  I think I got that really great stretch in her back fairly well.  Need to spend some more time on her feet.

  Cassandra:  Twenty minutes

I forgot to bring my whites.  I wish I could have punched up the highlights a bit more but I think her torso still came out rather nicely.

What do you think, sirs?

It's amazing how defined you can make a form even without your customary whites. I really like the way the 20-min came out. Very defined, very smooth form. Pretty. :)

I remember how vehemently our old Watercolor teacher used to condemn those who used whites. In her mind, it was "cheating" and contemptible.

I like the form definition in your sketches, with or without those contemptible whites.

I have encountered this attitude in watercolor painters myself. But it all depends: in mediums such as oil, acrylic, pastel, and charcoal you can't create many colors without white. In watercolor, it depends on the paper and the technique you use. If you're doing sheer layers and using a pale paper, white could be regarded as cheating, since you can "mix" the white of the paper with the paint. But on darker papers or fabric, or for those who do many, many layers of watercolor to create specific effects (I do this sometimes), white is sometimes essential. You can't avoid it, and so it's not cheating.

And I *love* the way that twisting, foreshortened back turned out; perfect!

I absolutely agree with you, which is why I endured a number of tongue-lashings over the course of that semester. I think she went through Conte Rejection early in her youth, and was still dealing with those issues years later.

Conte Rejection?....

I think you did a better job defining the contours without the whites as well. I think you should forget them again next week and see what happens! You still amaze me.

Any chance we could see a photo for comparison sometime? I know it's naked tuesday and all of that but maybe on one of the back shots or something? I'd love to be able to see the real thing and compare.
