In fifty years I am sure posterity will not care what Aunt Jeanette's opinions are in regards to this, but as an unapologetic Superman nut since I was 5 years old, I'm going to grace you all with my 2 cents in regards to the unveiling of the new Superman suit.

I have been feeling dubious about the new Superman movie ever since Tim Burton expressed an interest in doing one and wanting to cast Nicholas Cage...NICHOLAS CAGE and felt rather pleased when I realized it had gotten stuck in development hell.
Now however, it seems to be getting made...and holy cow...I like the director...and holy cow, they went with an unknown (and he's got brown eyes instead of blue, but I can live with that,) ...and okay, I'm a purist, I like the old shield better but I also recognize nobody else can even really tell the difference.
Today though, they have unveiled the new superman costume...and...I...don't...hate...it.
I don't mind the darker colors of the boots and the cape and I suspect they are going for the older Max Fleisher look with the smaller shield (I like the larger one myself,  but at least they're not going total old school and putting a black background on the shield) ... in fact my only two quibbles are...I don't like the mini shield on the belt and I don't like the neckline and how the cape tucks in.  At least they didn't put him in some leather armored gear like they did with Batman as well as The X-Men.  Superman doesn't need armor.  Bullets bounce off HIM...not his suit.

So...we'll see.

Now I'm going to wish John Williams was doing the music and please, please, please, please don't full the soundtrack with a bunch of "hip and cool" flavor of the month groups.  Do a SCORE dammit!

Yes.  Yes, I'm geeky.

I can understand favorites and talent but shouldn't be look even slightly like Superman? Nicholas Cage is far too old, for one. Hmph.

Oh, no, it's not Nick Cage. Whew! (The story is the studio comissioned some shots of Nick in the suit...and it looked SO ridiculous...well, the Tim Burton and Nick Cage rumors just...went...awaaaaaay.)

They got a relative unknown...a Brandon Routh. He does fill the suit nicely.

OK, I was wondering why I kept saw stuff about Superman last night on the news (I had the sound on the TV turned down and was listening to music while I chatted.)

I agree with the total revamping, ala Batman. I had students in the early 90's who had never seen the Burt West Batman character and only knew the steroid and armour Batman of Michael Keaton's movies. When I showed one little boy a picture of the TV Batman, he said "that's not the REAL Batman!" and laughed.

And yes, a movie SCORE, especially for one like this, is so much more appropriate than just a run-of-the-mill soundtrack. Is Williams doing it, or do you know?

I think his eyes (as I closely examine the super sized image) are kind of light to be brown.... They strike me as blue-grey. Which is nice.

I think you're right about the cape tucking in though -- he's going to have problems with that thing cutting off his breathing, or you know, he would if he weren't SUPERMAN!

*giddy with excitement*

I suspect his eyes have been tweaked in that photo or else it's a trick of the lighting. I've seen other shots of the actor and his eyes are as dark as mine.

He's wearing low-rise briefs!

More style concious, Superman, but it makes the package look smaller.

Did I just say that?

Hee. They actually had to reshoot some scenes in the first Superman movie because they looked at the dailies and realized there was some...shifting...going...on.... oh crap.

They really had to snug Chris Reeve up after that.

I...don't mind the costume. My brain is boggled by this admission. The maroon looks slightly out of place, as does the cape-tucky-thing (kinda Calvin-and-Hobbes to my eye), but it's...not bad! The shield DOES need to be bigger, though. It would be more in proportion with his chest.

Wow. I might actually see this movie now. Even though the plot makes me cry.

ack, ack, ack, I want to pinch his abs!!!! *slobber*

Hee hee hee.

Ab Fab indeed.

That cape is going to be irritating tucked in so close to the neck. Any one who has ridden in a Jeep without the windshield can tell you that all that flapping nears your ears is LOUD! Not to mention that the Superman outfit can be compressed into a little ball (been a Superman fan for over 44 year so far)
I know things change, but this wasn't broke.

Re: Cape
Just looking at the next line is uncomfortable..and can you imagine the choking if someone grabs the cape. I liked the more regal look with the former way the cape attached.

That new Superman has some nice legs. Look at those quads! I'd sit on his lap! :-D

So many men only work their upper body and only give their lower body a cursory workout.

Hm... He looks good. I'm not sure about the colours, especially the Blue. The cape is kinda odd...
The small shield.... The guy is well shaped, but he does not have a BIG chest so maybe they were afraid a big shield would overpower him.

My personal hot Superman is Dean Cain - not as Superman, but as Clark Kent. Dude, he looked good. Especially in the second season with the haircut and the new glasses. Yum. Or when he was shirtless.......... uh..... what were we talking about?

You didn't like the X-Men suits? I thought it made sense. The bright colours look better in the comics than would in movies. But you can't put Superman in a suit like that. That would be wrong!
Apr. 23rd, 2005 05:34 am (UTC)
No, I didn't mind the Batman or X-Men leather. As you said, it makes sense. However it would never work on Superman. Just like with Spider-Man, any tampering to the costume is Just Wrong.

I think with the smaller shield they were going for the old Fleisher cartoons look. I like the larger one. So...am I a post modern retro purist?
