My husband and I were looking over that site and we almost wonder if it's not a tongue-in-cheek critique of Ratzinger. There are posts strongly criticizing his hardline Catholicism (he thought John Paul wasn't strict enough), and they refer to him affectionately as the "Grand Inquisitor of Mother Rome," which doesn't really sound like something you'd call someone you liked. It's not a formal title, because there hasn't been a Grand Inquisitor since the very early 20th century.

Regarding his hardline status and his role at the Vatican to "root out heresy" wherever it lurks, there's a joke about Ratzinger:

Ratzinger dies and goes to heaven, and because of his great work for the Church is invited in to a personal audience with Jesus. The two are closeted alone in a room for hours, and occasionally shouting and even weeping can be heard. Everyone wonders what can be happening. After many hours, the door bursts open, and Jesus emerges, weeping, to cry out: "How could I have been so wrong!"

Heh. I've heard that. Somebody posted it on their LJ a few weeks ago. Maybe it was you.

Since I'm not Catholic, it's all pretty moot to me. ;)

Well, Ratzinger headed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (or something like that) which is the successor to the Inquisition. That sort of refers to his role in teh CDF.

"Well, Ratzinger headed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (or something like that) which is the successor to the Inquisition" having been raised by a mother who used to be catholic and having been raised in SA Tx heavily populated area of catholics, what does this mean for the American populas that wants more liberalization of the Catholic faith...this should be an interesting change if he is as hardline as the comments propose him to be...

My answer: I don't know.

Ratzinger's role in the CDF is different than Benedict XVI's role as pope. While it's the same person, it's a different role, and it could well be that we see a different side of him. Time will tell as to what Pope Benedict XVI is like.
