"A Story" or "How to be Successful"

One of the workshops I went to at Comic Con was on how to write a graphic novel.  There were quite a few panelists but a story got told to the audience I think from Orson Scott Card.  He told of another panel he had been on I believe with Harlan Ellison.

Harlan  looked at the audience full of wannabes and asked, "How many of you want to be writers?"

Nearly all the hands went up.

He looked at the hands and then asked, "How many of you are working on something right now?"
About half the hands went down.

"How many of you have actually *finished* something?"
Most of the hands went down leaving a few straggling in the air.

He looked again at the very few hands still raised and asked, "Of those you still many of you have actually submitted something to a publisher?"
The remaining hands went down into their sheepish owners laps.

"Well," he barked, "There's your FIRST CLUE."
