"Naked Tuesday"

Made it to figure drawing last night, unfortunately a bit late so I missed the early gestures. I still feel rusty but it's coming. I think I may start doing some ink washes.

Also a fun aside...I was talking to a woman there and mentioned my schooling. A guy came up and asked where I had gone and it turned out he was two years behind me there. He was in first year when I was in third so we knew some of the same people. Small world! He too has come to the Bay Area and is freelancing so it was really good to compare notes.

Anyway, last night was the lovely Jenny who had some really good poses. I wish I could have captured them better...I feel like my drawings are still really too stiff. Need to practice my gestures.

What do you think sirs?

Thanks!
Like I said, I think next week I might do an ink wash just for something different. I feel like I'm drawing really really tight and would like to loosen up.

Tell me more about this class you are taking!

I think that this is a very astute observation on your part.

Only practice will remove that sense of self-consciousness and allow the lines and gestures to flow as freely as you want them to – and have captured in the past.

Soo, stockings.... still a little wierd-feeling with the semi-naked versus all-naked?

Yes, but I figured I detailed my thoughts last week. No need to go into it again, but I do find it strange that two models in as many weeks felt the need to wear stockings.

No, I'm pretty sure it was a choice since some poses they had stockings and some they didn't. Also, if it were simply that, just wear socks! Don't cover up your whole legs for a figure drawing group!

I'm New Here, but....
I find your perspective interesting... and the model's perplexing. I'm a nudist, not an artist, and I've only modeled for a Life Drawing one time in my whole life, but it would seem to me that it isn't the model's place to determine costumes and poses, unless the artist is being compensated or commissioned for a specific work of art. As a potential model, I would never, ever think to question an artist's request to remove (or put on) clothing, or modify my pose as they wish (gravity permitting, of course). It's all about interpretation and flow, I would think, and perhaps you might be able to better smooth out your gestures, if you worked with models that weren't trying to call the shots on clothing or poses. That having been said, your discomfort when a model is partially clothed is something I see in nudist environments, sometimes. Total nudity can be written off as clinical and non-sexual. But a model in stockings, or otherwise partially clothed, has a special, almost sexual allure. As an artist, if you can capture that allure on media, your drawings will be special. Relax, and your gestures will flow. (But then again, what do I know...)
